Violiste Julija Hartig werd in Servië geboren, in een muzikaal gezin. Als 5-jarig meisje kreeg ze vioolles en spoedig werd haar muzikaliteit ontdekt. Ze studeerde aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten in Novi Sad en gaf, na haar afstuderen, ook les aan dit zelfde Conservatorium. In 1994 verhuist zij naar Nederland, waar ze studeerde aan het Codarts Conservatorium van Rotterdam en aan het Conservatorium van Utrecht, waar ze Cum Laude afstudeerde.
Op haar debuut-CD Black Rainbow gaat ze, samen met pianiste Reineke Broekhans, op zoek naar haar multiculturele wortels en de verbintenis ervan met de Hongaarse, Tsjechische en Slowaakse signatuur, respectievelijk via de muziek van George Enescu en Leoš Janáček, aangevuld met werk van de Turkse componist Fazıl Say en de betoverende patch-work compositie Black Rainbow van Akim Moiseenkov, waarin de viool kleuring geeft aan de stem van Hartig’s bet-overgrootmoeder, oorlogsgeluiden, voorbijrazende treinen, gelardeerd met effecten, sounds en metaforische tonen.
Black rainbow is een verbluffende en inspirerende CD van een violiste met een orkestrale sound die haar viool laat huilen, wenen, zingen en dansen in een breed metier. Met een zelfverzekerde, overtuigende en trefzekere techniek is de viool de kern, de ziel van de muziek, dat gelijk van start gaat in eerste tonen van Sonata for violin and piano van Janáček, waar je verderop, zo nu en dan in de piano-begeleiding, zelfs een imitatie van het cimbaal hoort. Hartig wordt virtuoos bijgestaan door pianist Reineke Broekhans die met een zelfde orkestrale signatuur de composities benaderd. Ook haar spel kleurt en beweegt moeiteloos mee in de compositorische schildering die soms onverwacht en abrupt wordt gemarkeerd door crescendo, accelerando’s of diminuendo’s. In deze schakeringen bewijzen deze twee musici dat ze elkaar muzikaal bijzonder goed aanvullen, dat bijvoorbeeld subliem tot zijn recht in deel IV van Sonata No. 3 van Enescu. Bijzonder is ook het werk Sonata No. 1 Op. 7 van Fazil Say. Een Turkse componist die een ferm, met-schitterende-energie gespeeld thema voorziet van bijzondere harmonieën, dat met innemende precisie wordt uitgevoerd.
Black Rainbow is een sensationeel mooi debuut van een violiste die de weerklank van haar Oost-Europees verleden breed laat resoneren in de toekomst, waarbij muzikale empathie, virtuositeit en samenspel elkaar moeiteloos omarmen.

Black Rainbow is the fantastic debut album by violinist Julija Hartig, on which she is accompanied by pianist Reineke Broekhans.
Violinist Julija Hartig was born in Serbia into a musical family. At the age of five, she began violin lessons, and her musicality was soon discovered. She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Novi Sad and, after graduating, also taught at the same conservatory. In 1994, she moved to the Netherlands, where she studied at the Codarts Conservatory in Rotterdam and the Utrecht Conservatory, where she graduated with honors.
On her debut CD, Black Rainbow, she and pianist Reineke Broekhans explore her multicultural roots and their connection to the Hungarian, Czech, and Slovak traditions, exploring the music of George Enescu and Leoš Janáček respectively. This work is complemented by works by Turkish composer Fazıl Say and the enchanting patchwork composition Black Rainbow by Akim Moiseenkov, in which the violin colors the voice of Hartig’s great-great-grandmother, the sounds of war, and speeding trains, interspersed with effects, sounds, and metaphorical tones.
Black Rainbow is a stunning and inspiring CD by a violinist with an orchestral sound who makes her violin weep, cry, sing, and dance in a wide range of genres. With a confident, convincing, and precise technique, the violin is the core, the soul of the music, which begins immediately with the opening notes of Janáček’s Sonata for Violin and Piano, where later on, occasionally in the piano accompaniment, you even hear an imitation of the cymbal. Hartig is virtuously accompanied by pianist Reineke Broekhans, who approaches the compositions with a similar orchestral signature. Her playing, too, colors and flows effortlessly within the compositional painting, which is sometimes unexpectedly and abruptly marked by crescendos, accelerandos, or diminuendos. In these nuances, these two musicians prove that they complement each other exceptionally well musically, which is sublimely evident, for example, in Part IV of Enescu’s Sonata No. 3. Also remarkable is Fazil Say’s Sonata No. 1, Op. 7. A Turkish composer who provides a firm, brilliantly energetic theme with remarkable harmonies, executed with captivating precision.
Black Rainbow is a sensationally beautiful debut by a violinist who allows the resonance of her Eastern European past to resonate widely into the future, where musical empathy, virtuosity, and ensemble playing effortlessly embrace each other.
