Yugoslav-born violinist Julija Hartig emigrated to the Netherlands thirty years ago. On this album, she explores her cultural identity, follows her ancestors through Central Europe and the Balkans, and examines the feeling of home.
All that in four compositions? Yes, because together with pianist Reineke Broekhans, Hartig creates a fascinating world full of nostalgia and fragile beauty, through the jerky energy of Leoš Janáček's Sonata for Violin and Piano, the whirling rhythms in Fazil Say's First Violin Sonata, and the Romanian folk music that gasps and sighs through George Enescu's Third Violin Sonata.
Every note sounds sincere, but the most personal piece is Black Rainbow for violin and live electronics, written by Hartig and Akim Moiseenkov. Sounds of war, departing trains, and Hartig's great-great-grandmother singing a Hungarian dirge—it's as if the past is speaking through radio waves.

De in Joegoslavië geboren violist Julija Hartig emigreerde dertig jaar geleden naar Nederland. Op dit album verkent ze haar culturele identiteit, volgt ze haar voorouders door Midden-Europa en de Balkan, en onderzoekt ze het gevoel van thuis.
Dat alles in vier composities? Ja, want samen met pianist Reineke Broekhans schept Hartig een boeiende wereld vol heimwee en broze schoonheid, via de schokkerige energie van Leoš Janáčeks Sonate voor viool en piano, de tollende ritmes in Fazil Says Eerste vioolsonate en de Roemeense volksmuziek die snakt en zucht door George Enescu’s Derde vioolsonate.
Elke noot klinkt oprecht, maar het persoonlijkste stuk is Black Rainbow voor viool en live-elektronica, geschreven door Hartig en Akim Moiseenkov. Oorlogsgeluiden, vertrekkende treinen en Hartigs betovergrootmoeder die een Hongaars treurlied zingt – het is alsof het verleden via radiogolven spreekt.
